about
This track was written and recorded on January 7, 2024 as part of Tinker Labs' ten week creative music recording project.
When we arrived, we were given the prompt of "relay race" as an experimental exercise in collaboration between the band and the recording engineer. We were told to think of the song's structure as a baton being passed from one bandmate to the other — the drums begin, then the bass, then the guitar.
Joni offered that she was inspired by new beginnings, specifically a Jane Hirshfield poem, "Counting, This New Year’s Morning, What Powers Yet Remain To Me". This inspired Xan to think of crocuses emerging after a long winter. Sere began the form of the song with a bass line and Joni wrote lyrics while piano was being recorded.
This song is about how we survive dark times of the year with friendship, real love, and exercising hope as a muscle.
We hope you enjoy it.
lyrics
Picturing myself awake
and sunlit
and walking
Every time it happens
i'm amazed that i've forgotten i can open
Windows open wide
you are a color in a vision
I'm not dreaming
Desperate to combine the passing feeling with the present, with what's coming
She could whisper anything i'd hear it
i want it
i want it
Barely leaning forward
we can listen
without aching
without yearning
